Advantages of Study Abroad
Higher education abroad reveals a great lot of potential for students, such as: obtaining the international-level diploma, which is appreciated by employers in different countries, knowledge of several languages, new perspectives in successful career building, mastering of updated international skills and etc. And these are the factors appreciated by many employers, especially those of international companies. It’s evident that foreign diploma is a serious basis for successful career.
How to Enter a Foreign University
Those who want to study in other countries are set different requirements, sometimes quite strict. For study abroad it is necessary to pass language and academic courses, such as TOEFL, IELTS, SAT, GRE, GMAT and others, to pass document competition and personal interviewing, if needed. As a rule, Universities accept students above 16 years old. After leaving secondary school in the native country one should complete special preparation courses (Foundation), which operate at Universities on the basis of special colleges and bigger language schools having partnership relations with such Universities. Typical Foundation program includes study on academic subjects, the selection of which correlates with the chosen future specialty, learning of foreign language and acquisition of study skills. Selection Committee starts its work in September. Beginning with the middle of June most of Universities accept documents for review. Every year Universities receive thousands of applications from all over the world, and the vacancies are occupied according to the principle “first come first served” (according to the order of application receipt). The Committee reviews documents for maximum 4 weeks but in high periods (February-April) it can take up to 2-3 months. The process of student visa obtaining is also quite long: embassies of all countries forward high requirements to such visa documents, and decision is taken during 4-6 weeks. That’s why we recommend starting preparation for entering Universities abroad already in October-November, that is, almost one year prior to start of classes. For each student the happiest moment is when he or she receives the Offer Letter, which, in fact, is the admission notification.
Higher Education in Great Britain
The United Kingdom holds one of top positions in the world on number of foreign students. It is holding this position even in spite of the fact that education in Great Britain, unlike many European countries, is paid. British Universities have a reputation of institutions providing their graduates with brilliant education and perspective for good employment. Advantages of life in the United Kingdom, such as high living standards, low crime level, absolute religious tolerance of the British society, developed infrastructure of British Universities, also play an important role while choosing a place to study.
The Procedure of Entering Universities of the United Kingdom
It is the central bureau of UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service), which deals with intake of students to all higher educational institutions of Great Britain, including the Universities. All applicants fill the UCAS form, which contains the following information on study achievements by the moment of application submission:
• either available score on passed graduation exams if the applicant has graduated the A-Level pre-University education,
• or the score, which the applicant is only intended to get at graduation exams;
• description of the applicant’s aspiration and ambition with reasoning of his/her decision of making career in this specific field (brief essay called personal statement)
• and the list of Universities of Great Britain (no more than 6) in the alphabetic order, where the applicant would like to get education. The Form is attached with a reference from school (or other educational institution graduated).
The document package must be sent to UCAS in January the latest, and if the list of Universities include also Oxford or Cambridge Universities, then even earlier – at least in September.
The listed Universities review the applications and then either offer a vacancy or refuse, or invite to an interview. As a rule the vacancy is offered conditionally, because the majority of students apply prior to their finals. A condition might be as follows: you must get a certain score at your final exams or – pass each of your chief subjects with a certain result.
It should be mentioned that maximum results (ААА) received at A-Level, is a required but not sufficient condition for entering two top famous Universities of England – Cambridge and Oxford. Admission to these Universities is provided based on results of their own entrance examinations and interviewing.
Higher Education in the USA
There are more than two thousand colleges and Universities in the USА, which provide programs on higher education. Students may enter US Universities immediately after secondary school. The main requirements are good results of study at school and excellent knowledge of English. The duration of Bachelor program is usually four years. However such leading Universities as Harvard or Yale, due to high competition and strict selection criteria, do not accept students after 11 years of schooling. It should be mentioned here that the youngest possible age of acceptance to US and Canadian Universities is 17. Those students, who received their school diplomas at the age of 16, have the chance to enter, first, the preparatory program; it includes study of English and of certain subjects referring to chosen specialty.
Alongside with Bachelor programs American higher schools offer programs on post-higher education. In order to enter the Magistrate or MBA program of an American University, students are to submit a diploma on higher education (Bachelor or specialist) and to pass official TOEFL and GMAT exams (for most of economic specialties). The Magistrate degree education in the USA lasts for 1.5-2 years. Those students whose test score is not enough are offered to have special preparation training for Magistrate study with duration of 6-9 months.
Higher Education in Germany
Higher education in Germany is very attractive on many reasons, such as: high level of teaching, time-honored traditions of Universities, and international prestige.
The system of German higher education includes about 350 institutions, among which there are Universities, Technical Universities, Institutes, colleges and higher schools. The majority of them are State institutions with education in German, but there are some Universities, which offer programs in the English language as well.
In Germany foreign students study on the same terms as citizens of this country, it means that they are entitled to free higher education in state Universities. Recently some German Universities have started charging for education, but the payment is quite reasonable, it ranges from 500 to 2000 Euro per year.
Students have several ways of being accepted to Universities. After finishing 11 years of study at school students can enter German school for the last 2-3 years of study there and to complete the German Abitur Program (11th - 13th year of study). The Abitur diploma enables to enter most of German Universities without entrance exams. Exceptions are the most prestigious Universities and specialties; they, on the contrary, offer to pass exams and win competition.
Beside academic requirements, a compulsory condition for entering Universities is a high level of knowledge of German, which is proved by results of TestDaf or DSH test. Those students who choose the program of study in English are to pass IELTS or TOEFL. There are special programs on preparation for entering German Universities, which not only train students to pass the required exams, but also provide considerable support on such entering.
Upon completion of education at German Universities students, depending on their specialty, can obtain either a diploma or the academic degree of the Magister, or pass state exam as a final (all these are qualifications of the same level). Alongside with this, during recent years some education programs with internationally recognized academic degrees – Bachelor and Magister – are introduced. According to German education system, study period for the Bachelor degree shall make 3-4 years, and to continue study for the Magister degree students will need additional 1-2 years.
